New Law Affects Using Cell Phones behind the Wheel

In response to growing statistics supporting the dangers of cell phone use while driving, California has established a new law cracking down on drivers handling cell phones. Previous laws banned talking and texting on handheld phones while operating a motor vehicle. However, the new law, AB1785, which took effect on January 1st, 2017, makes it illegal for a driver to hold and operate a handheld device unless the driver uses some form of hands-free operation.
