The California JPIA offers members career-enhancing opportunities to participate in Authority academies. Academies are training seminars that primarily focus on specific public sector disciplines including: Human Resources, Leadership, Management, Newly Elected Officials, Parks & Recreation, Public Works, and Risk Management.
Authority academies are multi-day training seminars that present essential theories and techniques in order to provide pragmatic solutions to solving everyday problems. Presented by qualified subject-matter experts that understand the role of risk management in member operations, academies are designed to expand the abilities of managers, supervisors, and leaders in areas including delegating, motivating, organizing, and working under pressure. Attendees learn how to apply these skills which will enable them to meet the daily demands of their agency while exhibiting ethical standards among employees and citizens.
The Authority hosted seven successful academies in 2019: the Risk Management Academy in January, the Parks & Recreation Academy in February, the Leadership Academy in March, the Human Resources Academy in April, the Newly Elected Officials Academy and Public Works Academy in June, and the Management Academy in September.
“We are proud to offer so many academies each year and to support the ongoing education and training of members,” said Michelle Aguayo, California JPIA Training Coordinator. “In 2019, we had so much interest from members that we increased the maximum number of attendees from 25 to 30 for several of our academies.”
In 2020, Authority members have the opportunity to participate in the following academies:
- Risk Management Academy (January 21-23, Huntington Beach)
- Parks & Recreation Academy (February 4-6, Indian Wells)
- Leadership Academy (March 24-26, Paso Robles)
- Executive Academy (April 6-8, Huntington Beach)
- Human Resources Academy (April 21-23, Huntington Beach)
- Newly Elected Officials Academy (May 31-June 2, Laguna Beach)
- Public Works Academy (June 16-18, Indian Wells)
- Management Academy (Sept 28-Oct 1, Paso Robles)
The registration process for academies adheres to guidelines that ensure members who need specific training can attend. Priority will be given in academy registration as follows:
- A member of the California JPIA
- First-time registrant for this academy or attended this academy more than three years ago
- Agency responsibilities approximate those of the intended academy audience
- Accompanied by no more than one other from the same agency
The Authority will provide an announcement of an upcoming academy three months prior to the academy start date. Those interested in attending must submit a “request to register” on the event website by the deadline given for each event. Upon submitting the request to register, a “Registration Pending” notification email will be sent out. Within five business days after the request to register deadline, the Authority will either confirm registration by email or place the person on a waiting list. For those placed on the waiting list, should space become subsequently available, the person would be notified as such by email.
The following academies are offered at no cost to members with attendance limited to 25 participants: Risk Management, Executives, Newly Elected Officials, and Public Works. Registration cost for the following academies is $375 ($175 without lodging) with attendance limited to 30 participants: Parks & Recreation, Leadership, Human Resources, and Management.
