Registration Open for the Elected Officials Summit

Registration is open for the Authority’s Elected Officials Summit. This educational event takes place May 1416, 2024, in Huntington Beach. Risk Management Educational Forum 2024 – Save the Date

The California JPIA’s 29th Annual Risk Management Educational Forum, Risk Management Confidential, is scheduled for October 9 to 11 at the Hyatt in Indian Wells.

The Forum theme is a noir-esque foray into uncertainty and intrigue. Much like Sam Spade, you’ll be required to use your grit and gumption to navigate the world of risk management, where every step could lead to unforeseen dangers. From the inscrutable keynote speaker to industry experts, attendees will explore the shadowy realms of legal liability, workers’ compensation, employment law, public safety, organizational dynamics, governance, and legislative minefields.

Registration is at no cost to members. Watch for further information about registration, sessions, and speakers over the coming months. Visit our Risk Management Educational Forum web page for more information, or send us an email.

Parks & Recreation Academy held in February

The California JPIA’s Parks & Recreation Academy was held on February 13–15 at the Rancho Bernardo Inn in San Diego. The Academy, a two-and-a-half-day training event, is designed to address the challenges and responsibilities of managers and supervisors and provide them with knowledge, techniques, and solutions. Attendees gained valuable insights on playground safety, defending your agency against playground litigation, background checks for volunteers and part-time employees, and contractual risk transfer.

“I loved the Academy,” said attendee Anthony Nguyen. “As a new supervisor who has dealt with contracts and insurance in a limited capacity, this has been extremely helpful.”

The next Parks & Recreation Academy will be held February 11–13, 2025.

The Authority’s academies are multi-day training seminars focusing on a specific public sector discipline. They allow attendees to interact with their peers and share real-world challenges and successes. For questions about the Parks & Recreation Academy or other academies, contact Michelle Aguayo, training coordinator, by email or phone at (562) 467-8777.

Certification for 2024 Annual Meeting of the Board of Directors

The California JPIA requires its members to designate a California JPIA Director and Alternate(s) prior to the Annual Meeting of the Board of Directors, scheduled for July each year. This process is facilitated through an automated and paperless certification system. In February, instructions for completing the certification were emailed to the clerk of each member agency. Members who have not yet completed their certification are urged to do so promptly.

The Board of Directors meeting will be held at the Authority’s campus in La Palma on Wednesday, July 24, 2024. For questions about the meeting or the certification process, contact Agency Clerk Veronica Ruiz by email or at (562) 467-8736.
